Position Summary:

The Network Services Technician is responsible for installation of systems per code and BICSI standards. They provide a high level of technical knowledge and site supervision to ensure successful completions of various projects.

Essential Functions:* Perform the installation, terminating, labeling, testing, and troubleshooting of voice, data, and fiber optic premise distribution systems including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Perform Site Surveys using construction plans and specifications, conduct visual site inspections
  • Develop Job Plans – determine materials/delivery schedules, develop manpower, tool/equipment lists, calculate completion dates, create GANTT/PERT project charts
  • Effectively supervise the performance of all aspects of the installation, terminating, labeling, testing and troubleshooting of voice, data, fiber optic and CATV premise distribution systems
  • Build Closets – determine equipment layouts, mount/install backboards, mount/install cross-connects, mount/install racks/patch panels, install optical fiber panels/hardware
  • Install Grounding Infrastructure – know local and National Electrical Code, install grounding backbones and busbars, perform grounding tests
  • Installation of Cable Support Systems such as cable trays, ladder racks, J-hooks, bridle/D-rings
  • Installation of Work Area Outlets, Pulling Backbone and Horizontal Cable (UTP/ScTP/STP-A/Fiber Optic)
  • Firestopping including coring of firewall, installing sleeves and firestopping
  • Pre-Termination - organize, form, dress cables, determine length/slack, label cables
  • Termination - complete IDC terminations, UTP, STP-A, cross-connect blocks, patch panels
  • Connectors - assemble and install 8-pin modular connectors, coaxial connectors, optical fiber ST/SC connectors, demonstrate connector color codes
  • Splicing – copper cable splicing, optical fiber (mechanical, fusion)
  • Testing - use tone test set, volt-ohm –meter, diagnose open, shorted, crossed, and split pairs, active circuits, copper cable Category 5e, 6 and 6a certification using handheld testers, optical fiber singlemode/multimode using light source/power meter and OTDR
  • Troubleshooting – diagnose and correct copper cable problems, optical fiber problems
  • Retrofits - remove abandoned cables, identify active circuits, implement cutover
  • Must be able to work safely and in compliance with operating and safety standards
  • Standards/Codes - demonstrate knowledge of ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-A, 569-A, 606, 607, and the National Electrical Code
  • Administrative Tasks – document test results, document as-builts, complete daily reports, order/inventory materials
  • Remain Current on Industry Practices – attend training/safety meetings, read industry journals/magazines, join professional trade organizations, keep up with standards/codes trends
  • Maintain familiarity with plans, specifications and job contract scope
  • Monitor and manage tool, equipment and material inventory of Service Vehicle or project
  • Maintain the Service Vehicle in a clean and orderly manner
  • Ensure that service and repair is performed in a timely manner
  • Monitor the work to ensure that the workmanship is completed in accordance with BICSI EIA/TIA standards and Local and National Electrical Code requirements
  • Establish good relationship with the client
  • Obtain acceptance and approval of completed work
  • Provide technical assistance, i.e., interpretation of drawings, recommending construction methods and equipment, etc., as required
  • Ensure that area where service work is performed is properly restored to normal and clean conditions when work is complete
  • Order materials and request manpower as needed
  • Ensure that all personnel under supervision are working in compliance with safety procedures
  • Document violations; notify Safety Director, recommend/implement corrective actions as required
  • Coordinate manpower
  • Coordinate premise distributions systems installation with Project Superintendent or equal

Experience and Education:

Required:*

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience with data communications/structures cabling with one (1) years’ experience as an Installer Level I
  • Strong working knowledge of the BICSI EIA/TIA installation standards and the National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • Ability to troubleshoot premise distributions systems and layout a project; includes the ability to read and interpret blueprints
  • Intermediate knowledge in MS Office Suite
  • Must have the ability to effectively read, write and communicate in the English language at a twelfth (12th) grade level
  • Mathematic skills sufficient at be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers and fractions
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver's license in good standing to meet company's driving requirements
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
  • Regularly lift and/or move objects 10-50 lbs occasionally lift and/or move objects that weigh more than 100 lbs
  • Frequently required to reach with hands and arms and adjust body position to bend, stoop, stand, walk, turn, pivot, kneel, crouch, dig, trench, excavate, lift, carry, climb and stand for long periods of time
  • Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust and focus, along with good eye-hand-foot coordination
  • Frequently required to use hand to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and balance
  • Ability to assess weights and judge distances and heights
  • Must be able to work and elevated heights and/or underground
  • Requires ability to wear steel toe/composite/alloy work boots
  • Requires ability to perform physical duties listed above for extended periods of time
  • Requires the ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required by location
  • The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions
  • Regular exposure to dirt, hazardous equipment, wiring, and underground and/or elevated heights
  • Work with sharp tools and electricity that could potentially produce cuts or burns
  • Often exposed to loud sounds and noise levels as well as very bright or inadequate lighting conditions
  • Are sometimes exposed to contaminants
  • Requires the ability to report to jobsites throughout Florida; locations vary depending on individuals home location
  • May be requested to work overtime and weekends

Position Type, Expected Hours of Work, and Travel:
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work vary but equate to 40 hours per week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Travel expected for this position includes travel to construction job sites as assigned.
