Agency Information: Founded in 1866, Osawatomie State Hospital (OSH) is licensed by the State of Kansas to provide care and treatment for adults diagnosed with psychiatric disorders regardless of ability to pay. OSH serves individuals from 36 counties in Kansas in collaboration with 12 Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs). The centers refer individuals for admission to the hospital through a collaborative screening process. There are currently two hospitals on the Osawatomie campus in Miami county: Osawatomie State Hospital and Adair Acute Care.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary: Osawatomie State Hospital currently has openings for AM MHDDT positions, 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This position provides direct care to our patients. You will encourage patients to participate in treatment and their activities of daily living. You will be interacting frequently with patients to promote therapeutic treatment with a helpful and respectful approach. *May be required to work up to 16 consecutive hours.

Direct Patient Care: As a mental health technician you will provide basic care to patients to enable them to meet their daily living needs and perform basic tasks to enable assessment of patient's condition. You will be trained to observe signs and symptoms of medical problems and will be taking vital signs accurately, reporting patient’s condition to the Registered Nurse.

You will participate in patient activities while encouraging active patient involvement in both treatment and unit activities through regular, direct involvement (observing and escorting). It may be necessary to drive or walk patients to scheduled meals, appointments, etc. both on and off grounds, including escorting the patient for laboratory procedures, explaining the procedure, encouraging cooperation and reporting outcomes/refusals to the Registered Nurse. You will be responsible for implementing the admission process of newly admitted patients by developing trust and rapport, familiarizing the patient with the unit environment, introducing other staff and patients, explaining the unit/program rules and regulations, assisting with patient's personal belongings and completing personal property inventory. Will also observe patients in order to detect and report any unusual or potentially aggressive behavior, which requires knowledge of, and ability to, recognize characteristics of mentally ill behavior and good judgment utilization.

Environment / Safety: Through training you will demonstrate knowledge of handling crisis/emergency situations to ensure patient/staff safety including initiation and follow through with DR. HEART's, CODE II and other emergency preparedness procedures in accordance with skill level. You will be making rounds and conduct special patient safety checks through regular 15-minute observations of all patients' physical and psychological status. There will be environmental cleaning tasks to maintain a clean, safe and comfortable environment by following Agency policies and procedures.

Documentation: You will document information in the Medical Record to meet existing standards. This is done to alert the next shift regarding patients on precautions by documenting significant incidents and changes in patient behavior, attitude, appetite, physical problems, etc.; provide input into treatment planning by recognizing patient progress or regression and track movement off grounds and in the hospital. Completes courtesy charting for other staff members.

Communication: As the mental health technician you will interact frequently with patients to promote a therapeutic milieu using a non-threatening, helpful and respectful approach. You will talk with and listen to patients and provide an opportunity for patients to ventilate their feelings and thoughts appropriately. You will use reflective listening and other communication techniques. Answers basic questions regarding the patients' own treatment. You will communicate with other staff members so that pertinent information essential to provide quality patient care is shared. You will be respectful and relate to patients in a professional manner.


Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications: Ability to perform work requiring physical strength to frequently and repetitively bend, stoop, walk, push, pull, twist, squat, and lift patients with assistance. Respond to aggressive patient behavior with specific, trained techniques including patient restraint. Ability to talk, hear, see, read and write. Must be able to lift at least 30 pounds repetitively.
