UNITY MEDICAL CENTER

POSITION DESCRIPTION

TITLE: LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST/TECHNICIAN REPORTS TO: LABORATORY SUPERVISOR

Responsible for the performance of routine biochemical laboratory tests and procedures as requested by physicians on both in-patients and out-patients for use in diagnosis and treatment.

Job Duties

  • Specimen Processing and Reporting Results:
  • Specimens are collected and identified properly(name, date, time, initials of collector)
  • Specimens are collected and processed in a timely manner, including routine and “stats”.

3. Results called when indicated.

4. Runs adequate number of controls.

5. Verifies that standards are acceptable and if indicated, takes appropriate action.

6. Performs tests according to procedures.

7. Panic values are repeated and called to appropriate individuals “stat”, and action clearly documented.

8. Consent forms are signed when needed for any procedure. (ABN’s , under aged children)

9. Demonstrates the knowledge/skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served on the assigned unit primarily the infant/pediatric/adolescent/adult geriatric patient.

10. File laboratory reports.

11. File reports for Medical Record Department.

II. Quality Assurance, Quality Control and Maintenance:

1. Maintains records and work logs.

2. Performs maintenance on instruments to meet State requirements.

3. Completes out-of-control forms and takes appropriate steps as indicated.

4. Cross reactivity comparison on serology kits.

5. Documents daily and periodically maintenance.

6. Evaluates pipettes, timers, and thermometers.

7. Performs CAP and API surveys.

8. Take inventory on stocked blood and returns blood at an acceptable time.

III. Cost Effectiveness:

1. Plans work so time and supplies are utilized.

2. Stores supplies properly to avoid deterioration.

3. Observes expiration dates and uses short dated material first.

4. Dates reagents and controls when opened or prepared.

5. Does not overstock on supplies.

IV. Any other duties assigned by the lab supervisor

Requirements:

  • Current state of Tennessee Medical Lab Tech/Medical Technologist licensure
  • Must have a high degree of customer service skills in order to communicate effectively
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate using the English language
  • Must be able to practice regular and dependable attendance (see attendance policy)
  • Must have the ability to work well with all clinical staff

Working Conditions

  • May be exposed to infectious blood borne diseases.
  • Exposed to hazardous chemicals.
  • Subject to varying and unpredictable situations.
  • Subject to irregular hours.
  • Occasional exposure to hot and humid environment, cold environment
  • Exposed to hot or noisy equipment.
  • Subject to many interruptions.
  • Handles absentee replacement on short notice.
  • Must be able to lift/carry greater than 30 lbs. for short periods of time, frequently.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $19.50 - $25.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • Every weekend
  • Night shift
  • On call
