We are seeking a Medical Billing Specialist to join our established team. We offer a competitive benefits package that includes a bonus twice a year to all levels of the organization. The role will initially be onsite and within 6-12 months may include hybrid work option.

Summary of Responsibilities
Responsible for addressing self-pay balances, processing refunds, and assisting patients with their accounts in the office and on the phone. The position requires accuracy, thoroughness, and a good understanding of insurance procedures for referrals, copays, deductibles, allowable, CPT, and Diagnosis codes. Work is multitasked and interrupted often. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with patients.

List of Responsibilities/Duties

  • Posts patient payments when needed.
  • Monitor high-balance accounts and detect insurance issues to correct claims.
  • Answer patient inquiries in person and on the phone related to account questions.
  • Assists with deposits and uploading superbills to the outsourced billing team.
  • Provides oversight on insurance denials and helps correct claims for high-dollar procedures.
  • Reviews the accounts receivable aging report for claims that need to be rebilled or followed up in some other manner.
  • Notifies physician of any non-payment accounts for determination of dismissal.
  • Assists with obtaining authorizations and referrals to assure claims will be approved.
  • Assists with sending bad debt accounts to collections and works with the collection agency.
  • Assists with other patient service responsibilities as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • The ability to perform basic math calculations is required.
  • Experience in Ophthalmology is a plus but not required.
  • Experience using Epic or any EMR is a plus.

Minimum Background Requirements

  • Two years of medical insurance/billing-related office experience, preference for a background in ophthalmology but not required.
  • Strong knowledge and capabilities of insurance billing procedures.
  • Microsoft Office computer experience.
  • Strong accurate mathematical capabilities.
  • Strong communication skills.

Minimum Demonstrated Skills

  • Understands posting charges and payments accurately and promptly, including the proper use of modifiers.
  • Always maintains patient confidentiality and communicates with the compliance officer regarding procedural changes and concerns.
  • Assists patients willingly, professionally, and accurately.
  • Cooperates and communicates with all staff members and physicians.
  • Attends required meetings.
  • Participates in professional development efforts to stay current on insurance coverage changes and regulatory matters.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to help as needed in all patient service roles.
  • Complies with all other practice policies and procedures including punctuality, attendance, and dress codes.
  • Word processing and computer experience are required.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to sit for long periods, with occasional bending.
  • Must be able to view and enter data into the computer for extended periods.
  • Must be able to communicate via the telephone.
