Major Functions

The County of Volusia is seeking a Library Specialist for the Library Services Division. This position is located at the Port Orange Regional Library and will be responsible paraprofessional work requiring knowledge and experience in library service techniques and supervisory skills in a specialized area of a regional library or full-service branch; or in a small, community branch.


Illustrative Duties

  • Performs front-line, telephone, and/or electronic service to citizens and visitors.

  • Assists with training, directing, and supervising staff, volunteers, community service workers, etc. in customer service, shelving, material processing procedures, or other related library functions.

  • Serves as the Volunteer Coordinator for assigned branch and coordinates volunteer activities such as scheduling, assigning, training and recognizing the volunteer work force.

  • May serve as the assistant branch head of a full-service branch, as the branch head of a community branch, or as “second in charge” of a specialized section of a regional branch. May direct and supervise activities in assigned sections in the absence of Section or Branch Heads.

  • Uses the integrated library system, online databases, the Internet, electronic catalog, and other library equipment, software, or hardware.

  • Responsible for daily and/or weekly money deposits.

  • May assist with liaison duties to Friends of the Library groups for smaller branches.

  • Attends workshops or meetings as required.

  • Performs work of all lower-level library classifications and related works as required.

Minimum Requirements

Graduation from an accredited two (2) year college with an Associate of Arts degree or the equivalent (60 credits), plus one year of paraprofessional library work; or, two (2) years of experience as a Library Assistant or equivalent.

A comparable amount of experience, education, and training may substitute for the minimum qualifications.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire and maintain thereafter.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge and experience in library service techniques, including shelving, sorting, filing materials based on the Dewey Decimal System, procedures, and practices.

  • Knowledge of the methods in cataloging, reference, and acquisition and materials processing phases of a library.

  • Customer service skills.

  • Knowledge of intermediate computer applications related to library services.

  • Knowledge of reader interest, books and authors, and of the theory and objectives of a public library system.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors, volunteers, vendors, Friends groups, etc.

  • Ability to maintain accurate records relating to collections, accounting for library materials, etc.

  • Ability to communicate concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to compile statistics and generate reports.

  • Ability to train, coordinate, direct, and supervise the work of a small staff or a large volunteer workforce. Ability to teach library techniques and procedures.

  • Ability to support, follow, and effectively promote system-wide or county-wide practices, procedures, or policies.

  • Ability to make independent decisions and use judgment on routine and non-routine matters.

  • Ability to develop methods for improvement of operations.

  • Ability to perform moderate mathematical computations including cash-handling techniques and preparation of moderate to large sum deposits.

  • Ability to ensure the proper operation of library services in a specialized area of the library.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or political affiliation.

  • Performs work of lower-level library classifications and related work as required.

Physical Demands:
Medium, repetitive work. Ability to see, hear and listen, talk; detailed finger dexterity (including grasping and small tool manipulation), may require visually acuity for fine print. Ability to lift and push 25+ pounds, carry, bend, reach, kneel, crouch, stretch, twist, and climb. Ability to stand for long periods of time.

Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend professional and technical manuals, procedures, and journals; memos, policies, safety instructions, etc. Ability to speak clearly and concisely. Ability to relate information, data, and detail verbally and in writing. Ability to perform intermediate mathematical and monetary functions.
