The Pennsylvania State University , College of Agricultural Sciences is seeking to hire a highly motivated individual to serve as a full-time Laboratory Technologist/Manager for Kapur Lab as part of a fast-paced and highly visible research team working on one or more infectious disease related projects of relevance to global health. The team, led by Professor Vivek Kapur, is well-supported with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, NIH, DTRA, and various other US and international funding agencies.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience of successfully working in a highly productive biomedical research laboratory setting. They will also exhibit critical thinking, curiosity, a strong work ethic, professional recordkeeping and communication skills, and the ability to work well with others in a fast-paced team environment. Candidates should be highly organized and able to contribute to multiple projects and meet project related deadlines. The applicant will be expected to develop technical competencies in the development of molecular and immunological assays and bioinformatic analytical tools and to consistently follow established laboratory protocols. While not an expectation, the position will provide considerable scientific writing and publishing opportunities if desired.

The successful candidate will be expected to work with minimal supervision and perform assignments independently as discussed and approved by the Principal Investigator. Basic job responsibilities will include independently setting up and performing experiments and procedures in support of lab goals and grant commitments (e.g., molecular biological and immunological assays, bacterial or viral culture, genome sequence analysis, etc.). The incumbent will be expected to: contribute to the planning, design and modification of research experiments and studies; collect, enter, summarize, and analyze data; as well as monitor and report results, and suggest modifications. The successful candidate may also be tasked to oversee and assist with the training of visiting scientists and temporary lab personnel as the need arises. Lab managerial responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, shipping supplies and reagents to our international collaborators, scheduling meetings, ordering office supplies, assisting with grant and proposal preparation and submission, making travel arrangements as well, and processing travel and other expense reports through Penn State’s SAP Concur system, and preparing relevant paperwork.

Education and Experience:

This position will be hired as a Research Technologist 2 and typically requires a Bachelor's d egree or higher plus 4 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience . A bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or a related discipline is preferred.
