The Los Angeles Community College District is hiring a full-time, tenure-track Cinema Production Instructor in the Cinema/TV Department. The assignment begins at Los Angeles City College (LACC) in Fall of 2023. The focus will be on teaching film production, film history, and may also include television production, audio production and post-production.


Founded in 1929, LACC is the oldest of the nine colleges that make up the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), the world’s largest community college district. The campus is in the heart of Los Angeles, minutes from Hollywood and Downtown, and conveniently adjacent to major freeway arteries and public transportation, including the MTA and Metro. The LACC Cinema and Television Department is dedicated to providing students with the technical skills and creative guidance to prepare them for professions in the entertainment industry. We grant degrees and certificates in both Cinema and Television and prepare students for transfer to four-year universities. Our program is housed in the HFPA Center for Cinema & Television at LACC, fully equipped with three soundstages, three computer labs for audio/video editing and color correction, mobile production equipment, 100 seat theater, audio production suites and classrooms supporting more than 1,000 students in over 30 unique classes.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Faculty members at LACC are expected to facilitate student learning by designing varied and exciting learning environments. Demonstrate sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff, and students.

The successful applicant will be required to fulfill a 30-hour-a-week assignment as specified by the current Labor Contract; the assignment is divided between teaching and departmental duties. Opportunities exist for summer and winter intersession teaching. Assignments may be day, evening, or weekends, and may be on the main LACC campus, online, or at a Dual Enrollment High School. In addition to the regular weekly teaching load, duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Teach 30 units over an academic year in accordance with established course outlines. For the 10month academic year; this translates to 15 teaching hours per semester.
  • Maintain scheduled office hours for student contact (5.5 per week).
  • Devote a minimum of five hours weekly to campus responsibilities (senate, curriculum, department events, etc.).
  • Assess student performance and maintain accurate student records. Submit feedback, rosters, and grades in a timely fashion.
  • Advise, assist and mentor students to promote student success.
  • Facilitate student achievement of certificates by assisting the department to advise, guide and inform students of options and procedures.
  • Participate in the development and the assessment of student learning outcomes (SLOs).
  • Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the discipline.
  • Develop and update department course curricula, including developing hybrid and/or online courses.
  • Provide leadership in creating new curriculum that emulates on-the-job production and post-production proficiency.
  • Develop resources, materials, and strategies, including using multimedia technology, to teach students in a multicultural environment.
  • Assess the need for equipment and educational materials, and formulate and submit appropriate purchase requests.
  • Assist with annual Advisory Board meetings.
  • Develop a student recruitment plan and promote awareness of LACC Cinema/TV classes at local high and middle schools. Participate in Outreach events and department tours.
  • Assist in grant writing activities such as the Strong Workforce Program (SWP) and Perkins grant awards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Film/Cinema and Media Studies, Film, Television, and Media Studies, Drama/Theater Arts, Mass Communication; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND; Master’s degree in Visual Studies, Media Studies, English, or Communication; OR
  • The equivalent.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff and students.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT COVID 19 VACCINATION:

Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated and complete a baseline test or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees’ policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.


DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:

  • Ability to teach single-camera-style film production techniques. Professional experience in this area is desirable, such as proficiency with current digital camera technologies, an understanding of motion picture camera fundamentals, familiar with lighting and sound equipment.
  • Ability to teach producing fundamentals, such as scriptwriting, storyboarding, location scouting, budgeting, permits and insurance, etc.
  • Ability to teach video post-production, with an emphasis on picture and sound editing aesthetics and techniques.
  • Ability to teach film history/aesthetics or multi-camera television production courses is a plus.
  • Knowledge of current practices in Online Education, and qualified to teach online courses using learning management systems such as Canvas is desirable.
  • Demonstrates ongoing industry connections/outreach to maintain skills and knowledge current with industry practices in film production, film festivals, and distribution outlets. Must be an ongoing professional learner. Knowledge in new media and emerging technologies is a plus.
  • Recent teaching experience at the community college or college level is desirable.
  • Participation in shared governance, college committees, and/or curriculum evaluation, revision and development is a plus.
  • Ability to work with students of varying academic preparation and learning styles.
  • Knowledgeable about culturally sustaining pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging African American, Latinx and historically underrepresented and underserved populations.


SALARY AND BENEFITS:

The current starting range is from $66,220 to $103,100 for the 10-month academic year depending on education and experience. The doctoral differential is $4,180 per academic year. The District provides an excellent benefit package including medical, vision, dental, and life insurance for the employee and eligible dependents.
