Jefferson County Coroner’s Office is searching for a Forensic Autopsy Technician- Part Time. As a Forensic Autopsy Technician, you will be responsible for assisting the pathologist with autopsies and non-autopsy cases by collecting, sorting, and documenting specimens. You will also manage the storage, destruction, and mailing of specimens, autopsy instruments, and medical devices.

This position is in-person at the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. The expected hourly rate for this position is $26.00 USD per hour and will be based on experience and education.

Please note that this is a temporary, non-benefited position scheduled to work approximately 30 hours per week. You are able to earn 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to 48 hours.

Many citizens don’t realize that the Coroner’s responsibilities extend far beyond the scene of death and the autopsy suite. We review thousands of pages of medical records each week. We work closely with hospice care professionals, law enforcement agencies and first responders, area funeral directors and physicians.

Most important, we work closely and compassionately with more than a thousand families each year as they cope with the loss of a loved one. Often, our relationship with family members and friends may continue for months.

Essential Duties:
As the Forensic Autopsy Technician, you will:
Assist the contracted forensic pathologist with autopsy and external exam processes in accordance with the established department policies and procedures, safety, environmental, and infection standards.
Document, package, and store toxicology, evidence effects, personal property, medications, and physical attributes.
Determine destruction method for medications, toxicology, and specimens. Assists with packaging and destruction process of medications. Packages and destroys toxicology, specimens, and medical devices and tools.
Maintain autopsy information by entering or uploading toxicology, specimens, autopsy photos, related documentation, and other relevant data into the case management system COHERO.
Ensure autopsy instruments, fixtures, and suites are clean, sterile, and organized. Maintain cooler, dock area, and laundry cleaned and organized.
Assist with documenting the reconciliation of bodies. Assists with the physical intake and documentation of the release of bodies, property, and evidence.
Prepare and package toxicology for dissemination to other agencies. Delivers packages to FedEx.
Stock autopsy room with supplies and tracks and determines supplies to be ordered.
Maintain established department policies and procedures, safety, environmental, and infection standards.
May testify in court.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma AND
1 year of autopsy, lab, toxicology, or relevant experience OR

Preferred Qualifications

Some college in biology or physical science
Knowledge of anatomy and physiology
2-3 years of experience conducting or assisting with autopsies

Additional Information:
Offer of employment contingent upon successful completion of criminal history, motor vehicle report, education verification, and/or references.
