Food Service Director

Position Summary: Coordinate and manage a Food Service department that provides balanced and nutritious meals conforming to all food quality, nutrition, and productivity standards as well as federal and state standards. This includes appropriate supervision and instruction of all cafeteria personnel.

General Purpose: To assure that each District student is provided food of highly nutritious quality in an atmosphere of cleanliness, cheerfulness, and personal caring in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and requirements including public health and safety.

Essential Functions

  • Supervise and instruct food service personnel in the safe and proper use of all kitchen and cafeteria equipment to maintain the highest standards of cleanliness and safety in the kitchens
  • Interview and recommend appointment of all food service personnel
  • Verify the District’s program meets all federal and state standards for school breakfast and lunch programs
  • Plan menus for school breakfasts, lunches and special events based on sound nutritional adequacy and requirements
  • Follow proper receiving, storage, and preparation techniques to ensure that all food items are maintained correctly until consumed
  • Coordinate assignments and hours of food service personnel to ensure economical use of food, timely preparation, and financial due diligence
  • Coordinate ordering and delivery of food items according to school schedule, which includes allocation and usage of government commodities through PA Meals
  • Conduct routine inspections in each kitchen and cafeteria to ensure proper food preparation, serving, sanitation of equipment, including utensils, trays, dishes, etc., and safety and health standards are being maintained
  • Make applications in a timely manner to ensure the District receives all appropriate federal and state subsidies
  • Review all food service expenditures and submit authorized, approved billings to the Business Office for payment; maintain proper financial records of all revenues and expenses in accordance with state and federal requirements including local audit requirements
  • Prepare and submit all required reports to the state and federal governments
  • Plan and secure long and short-term food purchases in accordance with budgeted allocations and menu needs
  • Performs other duties as assigned including participation on the District Wellness Committee

Marginal Functions

  • Plan in-service training programs and staff meetings on a regular basis
  • Keep personnel informed of required health laws
  • Investigate and resolve complaints regarding food quality, service, or accommodations
  • Maintain an inventory of all cafeteria food, materials, and equipment in all school buildings including inventory requirements for state and federal projects; keep detailed inventory records
  • Keep informed of new developments in equipment that will improve and upgrade the school food service program
  • Assist in the establishment and interpretation of the objectives of the food service program to students, staff, parents, and the community
  • Cooperate in the planning of school food service facilities including layouts and the selection of large and small equipment and furnishings
  • Coordinate with the Buildings and Grounds Department and outside vendors in planning for the proper care and maintenance of equipment and supplies and the proper cleaning of food service areas
  • Make or supervise the deposit of all daily revenues

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Required: Working knowledge of all local and state health laws and regulations, including all regulations associated with the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program

Working knowledge of Point of Sale (POS) software
Working knowledge of MS Word and MS Excel
Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods
The District will require immediate entrance into the SNA Certificate Program with the goal to eventually obtain a Level 3 Certificate, if not already certified, or request proof of credentialing as a School Nutrition Specialist.

  • At least 8 hours of food safety training is required either not more than 5 years prior to the start date with the District or completed within 30 calendar days of employment start date
  • At least 12 hours of annual continuing education/training in addition to the food safety training required in the first year of employment.
  • Required annual training to obtain a passing certificate number for SNP Sponsor Application

Required Education

· Associate degree in food and nutrition, food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field) and2 years of relevant SNP experience; or

· Bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition, food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field; or

· Bachelor’s degree in any academic major and Level 3 or Level 4 SNA Certificateand/or School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) credential; or

· Bachelor’s degree in any academic major and at least 2 years of relevant SNP experience

Required Certification

  • ServSafe Certification obtained within the last five years and maintained every five years

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $55,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
