The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. Job Description

Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is leading the design of the future reactor plant instrumentation and control (I&C) system for the next generation fast attack submarine SSN(X) and is looking for you to join the I&C unit! The SSN(X) I&C unit is looking for an experienced Electrical Engineer to be an integral part of the team developing technology concepts for the future reactor protection and power system. The successful candidate will be a part of a growing cross-site team (Niskayuna, NY and West Mifflin, PA). You will also support developing and integrating and equipment health monitoring, data collection and computer-based procedure developments.

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Complete feasibility studies for incorporating new technology concepts into a next SSN I&C and/or power system design.
  • Evaluate and propose changes to existing electrical system and/or component designs to spur advancing technology for SSN(X).
  • Interface with other NNL electrical communities for potential improvements items.
  • Interact with stakeholder organizations both inside NNL and outside stakeholders, such as the shipyards and Naval Reactors.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

  • BS degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering from an accredited college or university and a minimum of six years of relevant experience; or
  • MS degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience or;
  • Currently or previously Shift Supervisor Part I qualified or EDO and two years as EOOW in the Nuclear Operations Program or Three years as SRE plus Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and Fuel and Barrier Shift Supervisor (ECF only) or SRE qualified and six years of experience

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in the design and/or operation of I&C and electrical power systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate and execute a development plan that involves multiple organizations.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication will be essential in the candidate’s ability to contribute effectively in a teaming environment.
  • Strong written communication skills with an ability to articulate technical ideas in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated can-do proactive approach that displays self-motivation, commitment, ownership, and personal accountability.
  • Effective time and management skills.
