Salary Range: $140,000 - $190,000

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Director of Development will join Columbia University’s Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute (ZMBBI) at an extraordinary moment as it begins its second decade. A world-class neuroscience institute, ZMBBI brings together more than 850 researchers to study the mind and brain in ways that will lead to transformative discoveries. The Director of Development leads a comprehensive fundraising effort and manages three professionals.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Principal Gifts, the Director of Development will collaborate with Columbia colleagues across academic and administrative departments.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Build and manage a portfolio of up to 50 highly-rated prospects to strengthen their ties to the institution by discovering their interests and crafting giving opportunities which match the Zuckerman Institute’s priorities. This work will include coordinating with ZMBBI faculty leadership, the University President, Senior University Executives, Trustees, Deans, volunteer leaders, faculty,, and other development officers in order to serve donors optimally and to secure gifts of $500,000 or higher.

Develop and execute a fundraising plan for the ZMBBI in partnership with Institute and OAD leadership. Work with the Institute’s senior faculty leadership to identify and articulate Institute priorities.

Serve as point person for all activities related to the Institute’s Brain Trust, including building relationships with Board members and ensuring strong engagement throughout each member’s tenure. Will manage all development, governance and nominating activity which includes: staffing Board members on their outreach, engagement, and solicitation of prospective donors; identifying new Board members, onboarding members and ensuring effective leadership transitions.

Develops development communications resources, including proposals, brochures, and/or stewardship materials by partnering with staff in the Office of Alumni and Development and/or hiring freelance writers and designers.

Manage a team of three advancement staff (Senior Associate or Associate Director of Development Events and Programs, a Major Gifts Officer and/or Assistant Director of Individual Giving, and a Development Coordinator).

May assist in the strategic planning for and lead the day-to-day management of a campaign for the Zuckerman Institute. This includes, but is not limited to, staffing the leadership of the Zuckerman Institute and other scientists involved in the Institute, coordinating staff assigned to assist with the Campaign, and managing volunteer engagement.

Assist with other duties as assigned.

TIME BREAKDOWN

Interaction with fundraising prospects (40%)

Board management with a focus on engagement and identifying fundraising opportunities (20%)

Collaborate with development officers across the University to maximize gift opportunities tied to the interest of their donors and prospects with a focus on partnering with Principal Gift and Gift Planning officers (20%)

Engaging with senior Institute leaders and faculty as part of the leadership team (10%)

Team management (10%)

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree and seven (7) to nine (9) years of development experience (primarily in major gifts fund raising), or other related senior experience in a philanthropic environment, are required. Demonstrated ability to effectively leverage the time of senior volunteers, and demonstrated success in all phases of cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding large gifts ($500,000 and above) from individuals. Must possess demonstrated experience writing proposals and other development communications. Proficiency in Microsoft Office is needed.

Must be detail oriented, use excellent independent judgment and initiative, and have a proactive donor-centric attitude when interacting with individuals, corporations, foundations, and other constituencies. Demonstrated ability to work in a high pressure, fast-paced environment. Must possess the ability to work with changing priorities and multiple projects. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including a high level of attention to detail and active listening skills. Must be able to problem-solve and troubleshoot, in addition to the ability to work independently in a dynamic team environment. Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with a diverse group of academic leaders and administrators.

The successful candidate will be an effective, motivating manager, as well as fundraiser and manager of donor relationships. The individual must work well with all levels of management, be flexible in nature, have sound judgment with a collaborative style that fosters teamwork and cooperation beyond the immediate team to the broader organization. Excellent interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence, with an ability to grow and maintain short and long-term productive relationships internally and externally. The capacity to clearly communicate the mission of the Zuckerman Institute is required.

Preferred Qualifications

An advanced degree is preferred.

Other Requirements

This position requires evening work and travel as necessary.

Subject to business needs, the Office of Alumni and Development supports a hybrid work arrangement for this position. Options will be discussed during the interview process.
