Position Description


The SAC is an independent and impact-creating organization that aims to lead the industry toward a shared vision of sustainability based upon a joint approach for measuring, evaluating, and improving performance.

As a non-profit organization, it has members from across the apparel, footwear and textile sector, but exists independently outside any one company so that it can drive progress. The SAC’s collective action efforts bring more than 280 global brands, retailers, manufacturers, NGOs, academics and industry associations together. They represent about half of the apparel and footwear industry along the whole supply chain – from sustainability pioneers to organizations just getting started.


The Director, Communications will be responsible for all member-focused communications at the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), developing SAC- and member-led content that successfully weaves together the organization’s past, present, and future into a cohesive, streamlined narrative that is understood clearly both internally and externally. As a strong storyteller and exceptional writer, you will form relationships with members, stakeholders, influencers, and academics alike to ensure the work of the SAC and its members continues to be built in a positive light. You enjoy strategizing, devising solutions collaboratively, and then rolling up your sleeves and making it happen, while working collaboratively across the organization.


As one of the SAC’s key brand ambassadors, the Director of Communications will help to spread the SAC story to external audiences. The role will provide broad support to the wider Marketing & Communications team in performing duties in support of the organization’s strategic goals while nurturing key relationships. This role also includes two direct reports, who help manage the day-to-day communications of our membership activities and those of the Higg Index.

Duties:


Communications

  • Outline customer journey so that SAC members and stakeholders clearly understand the value to each organization and why we are stronger together
  • Build a narrative that showcases the value of becoming an SAC member
  • Proactively tell the story of the SAC to internal and external audiences through a variety of tools and channels.
  • Showcase SAC’s role as a thought leader in key areas like the decarbonization of supply chains through partnerships, reports and articles. This includes finding partners who can support the development of such content, like topic experts, consultancies, academics and other industry associations, etc.
  • Own development of the SAC’s Annual Report.
  • Help drive the development of the SAC brand and what it represents.
  • Leading SAC content creation + strategy
    • Research trending topics that align with the SAC’s strategic plan to develop well-informed themes
    • Writing strategic content including thought leadership blogs, ongoing reports, and other materials in partnership with other industry leaders
    • Serving as the host/moderator for video, podcast, or webinar content that position SAC as a thought leader in the space
    • Capturing and amplifying member stories and sharing best practices to reinforce tool adoption
  • Support an integrated marketing and communications plan that strategically positions the SAC as the leading industry association dedicated to sustainability, and positions the Higg Index as the globally leading standard to assess impact.
  • Own and nurture relationships with key members and stakeholders and proactively find opportunities to share our work in alignment with our strategic plan and in partnership with our ecosystem partners.
  • Develop KPIs for content and regularly report on the success of campaigns, highlighting successes and key learnings; adjust the strategy based on key learnings to optimize our approach.
  • Work with other members of the communications team to ensure press activities, social media and events are also supporting the needs of members and the Higg Index, and are effectively telling the SAC’s story.


Management

  • Manage two team members and oversee their daily work and professional development.
  • Hold regular meetings with direct reports.
  • Provide regular feedback and end-of-year performance reviews.
  • Report to Senior Director, Communications, any gaps or additional resource needs.


Qualifications and Experience

Ideal candidate has:

  • 10+ years of experience in content strategy, membership communications or broader communications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or other related fields and/or related work experience
  • Proficient in GSuite, Canva, Mailchimp, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of video and podcast editing tools a distinct advantage
  • WordPress and Google Analytics knowledge is essential.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • Skilled in online and offline content and branding strategies and approaches.
  • Project management and time management skills.
  • Ability to work in an ambiguous, fast-paced environment.


Reporting Structure

This is a full-time role, reporting directly to the Senior Director of Communications.

Compensation and Location

Remote, NAMER. SAC offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience. Salary bands are based on the country of location. If this role is hired in the US, the starting salary band is $120,000 - $128,000.

SAC is a global organization, and as such, SAC staff sometimes work early or late hours.
