    Role Overview
    The Deputy Communications Officer assists the Communications Officer with planning, developing, coordinating, implementing, and collaborating with staff for the successful completion of projects assigned to the Public Information Office. The Deputy Communications Officer also oversees community outreach initiatives and engagement strategies to inform stakeholders and inspire the Washington County community to participate in public education initiatives.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelor's Degree in communications, broadcast or print media, marketing, organizational development, public relations, education, or other related field.
    • A minimum of five (5) or more years of experience in public relations, communications, print or broadcast media, education, or other related field.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as editing expertise.
    • Skills to solve problems creatively and to perform independent, thoughtful analysis, and effectively organize and prioritize work.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to write clear, concise copy for diverse audiences and distribution across various platforms.
    • Capability to build trust and relationships with and among all stakeholders, in particular dealing with sensitive and confidential information.
    • Strong project management skills, with the ability to effectively manage simultaneous projects and timely priorities.
    • Knowledge or familiarity with business software and computer applications, including website and social media platforms.
    • As needed, market district programs and events for social media, publications, and presentations.
    • Regular and predictable attendance.
    • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.


    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s Degree in communications, broadcast or print media, marketing, organizational development, public relations, education, or other related field
    • Current Accreditation in Public Relations (APR)


    Role Responsibilities

    • Develops and advances productive relationships with elected officials, governmental and non-governmental agencies, media, community organizations, and other key stakeholders.
    • Plans, develops, and facilitates comprehensive systemic communication strategies and programs in collaboration with the Chief Communications Officer.
    • Advocates and promotes the Washington County Board of Education’s legislative priorities at the state government level by strategically engaging and liaising with lawmakers, legislative aides, community partners, media, and other stakeholders.
    • Provides support to the Washington County Board of Education’s Legislative Response Team (LRT).
    • Monitors and reports on local, state, and federal legislation, policies, and trending issues which impact or have the potential to impact WCPS’ operations and interests and provides regular reports of such to the Board of Education and senior leadership.
    • Supports the Legal department by drafting, reviewing, and presenting legislative testimony on behalf of the LRT.
    • Develops, reviews, and revises internal and external communications under the direction of the Chief Communications Officer, including but not limited to: media releases, public information campaigns, video scripts and storyboards, emails, social media content, speeches, talking points.
    • Enhances WCPS’ image by promoting and maintaining its “brand,” key messages, and core values.
    • Establishes and coordinates a systemwide communications calendar to support consistent and collaborative messaging at the school and district levels.
    • Supports the Office of Safety and Security with crisis communication systems, templates, and reunification plans.
    • Creates, organizes, maintains, and updates school-based communications templates.
    • Supports the Public Information Office by maintaining, updating, and reviewing the district website and school websites to increase effective communication between WCPS and its stakeholders and in such a way to ensure functionality and ease of use in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
    • Develops detailed, comprehensive community engagement plans that support the goals of the Board of Education and the school system.
    • Develops and maintains WCPS stakeholder contacts, including developing up-to-date contact lists with a wide range of community partners.
    • Proactively identifies opportunities for stakeholder engagement and facilitates community connections through various venues and platforms, including but not limited to digital tools and traditional in-person events.
    • Represents WCPS and networks with stakeholders and community members at community events and meetings.
    • Assumes the role and responsibilities of the Chief Communications Officer in that person’s absence, including acting as school system spokesperson and advisor in the area of communication.
