This position is remote.

  • Travel is estimated to be two overnight trips per month of one- or two-night duration, plus travel to continuing education events and team meetings once a quarter. Frequency based on business needs.

Solar Construction Manager

The Solar Construction Manager is responsible for the construction of solar projects across the United States and Canada. Working with distributed local teams of project managers and installers, the Solar Construction Manager will deliver multiple simultaneous projects with a typical array size of 350kW.

DAY-TO-DAY WORK CONSISTS OF:

  • Sales Enablement: Work with sales teams and clients to ensure constructability of conceptual designs for roof, ground, and canopy photovoltaic installations. Prepare indicative pricing for various conceptual design alternatives using prior experience and rules of thumb.
  • Schematic Design: Evaluate site layouts and single line diagrams for constructability issues and advise design team of alternatives. Refine pricing models for schematic design alternatives using prior experience and rules of thumb. Prepare preliminary project schedules. Act as a SME regarding technology selection (modules/inverter/string devices/racking) and the impact of such technologies on project economics.
  • Final Design: support the design and construction teams in managing third-party consulting engineers to design safe, reliable, and value-engineered solutions and obtaining approvals from AHJ’s.
  • Interconnection: support the design and local construction teams in managing third-party consulting engineers to obtain PTO and ISA approvals in a timely manner. Review impact studies, consult with project team on best paths forward, and manage third party engineers and utility personnel to ensure execution per the project plan.
  • Procurement: Lead procurement efforts for material and labor providers, including bid packages and final negotiations with providers. Coordinate review of project-specific equipment specifications, supplier submittals, and vendor and contractor-supplied equipment shop drawings for compliance with approved design and to ensure compatibility with other building systems.
  • Construction: coach the local construction team to ensure safe, timely, and profitable completion of projects. Manage drawings, submittals and RFIs. Coordinate timely responses to construction-related issues. Prepare baseline project schedule. Using in-person visits and technology, review progress of project and advise local team of issues and opportunities.
  • Validation: coordinate validation of installations to ensure expected energy delivery and ensure smooth transition of generating assets to client.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience constructing multiple concurrent commercial photovoltaic projects in various utility territories and permitting jurisdictions.
  • Competency in construction methodologies related to the solar PV industry including scheduling and sequencing of work items, means and methods of installation, jobsite safety leadership, review of subcontractor and vendor payment applications, coordination of approvals from various AHJ’s, utility coordination, startup, and commissioning.
  • Familiarity with structural, civil and geotechnical construction practices related to commercial rooftop, canopy, and ground mount projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate and manage subcontractors, suppliers, and third-party consulting engineers
  • Strong understanding of applicable building and fire codes and standards (especially NEC, NFPA, NBC, and ASTM E2848-13), state and provincial adoption, and their application in existing buildings.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills, especially the ability to communicate technical topics to various audiences including customers, AHJs, utilities and contractors.
  • Strong leadership and teaming skills
  • Capable of working independently - ability to work autonomously and with a drive toward project completion.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • NABCEP PV Installation Professional Certification strongly preferred
  • OSHA30 and/or EM385-40hr preferred

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Two- or four-year degree in engineering, engineering mechanics, applied science, building construction, construction management, or similar degree
  • Five years of experience designing and/or installing photovoltaic systems

Annual Base Pay Range - $130,000 - $160,000
