The mission of the Office of Population Health (OPH) is to create, apply and disseminate knowledge about the many determinants of health in order to improve health and health security and to support activities which improve health equity and eliminate health disparities. One of the larger programs within the OPH is the California Cancer Reporting and Epidemiologic Surveillance (CalCARES) Program. CalCARES partners with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to operate the state mandated California Cancer Registry (CCR), a statewide population-based cancer surveillance system.

Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Surveillance and Data Use Unit Manager, California Cancer Reporting and Epidemiologic Surveillance (CalCARES) Program, the Computational and Data Science Research Spec. 3 will be responsible for (a) overseeing and performing statistical analysis of cancer registry data, (b) overseeing and performing electronic data linkages between registry data, cohort data, and other databases, © creating analytical cancer data files, (d) supporting the enhancement and quality of CCR research data and (e) leading mapping and geographic analysis.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Considerable experience with statistical analysis of health outcomes.
  • Experience with geocoding, particularly regarding data quality, and the application of GIS in health disparity research.
  • Strong SAS programming skills
  • Well-rounded knowledge of biostatistics and epidemiology
  • Organizational skills to function independently, keep track of multiple projects, work to meet specific deadlines, and document procedures
  • Knowledge of methods in cancer surveillance
  • Oral and written communication skills to communicate and convey information/data effectively at a professional level with a diverse group of individuals/public
  • Advanced skills and demonstrated experience with GIS software
  • Advanced skills and demonstrated experience with research design and analysis
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters level education in epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, or a public health-related field is highly desirable
  • Experience with electronic data linkages highly desirable
  • Experience with Seer*Prep software highly desirable
  • Experience with cancer registry data and operations is highly desirable
