Building Maintenance Specialist maintains, repairs, and restores all aspects of the buildings at Custer State Park. Work will entail all aspects of new building construction, remodeling of current facilities including constructing interior walls, installing sheetrock, taping, texturing and painting of walls and buildings, operation of a variety of equipment. Concrete work to include setting of grades, footings, mixing and pouring of concrete for repairs which include sidewalks, approaches, steps and floors. Inspection and repairs of roofs by replacing shingles or other roofing materials. Performs installation as needed to meet the facility needs, such as installing siding, cabinets, countertops, shelves. Cuts and installs millwork as needed. Installs doors, closures and locksets. Applies or repairs ceramic tiles and vinyl tiles, installs carpet and linoleum. The Building Maintenance Specialist works under the direction of the Maintenance Program Manager (Physical Plant Manager II). . Planning and coordinating major building projects with be coordinated with the Maintenance Program Manager.

Applicant will have received technical training in carpentry, plumbing, and concrete work. Applicant needs to be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions. Applicant needs to be able to perform physical labor using a variety of machinery and equipment. Applicant needs to be able to repair and maintain a variety of facilities, machinery and equipment. Applicant will sometimes work in awkward positions, confining spaces, and around vehicle wiring and power takeoffs. Applicant will be exposed to fumes from exhausts, paints, and petroleum products; fumes from smoke and fire during controlled burns; and unpleasant odors and bacteria around toilets, fish cleaning stations, and dead or diseased wildlife.

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid driver's license

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Technical training and experience in carpentry field to include concrete work and basic plumbing.

Knowledge of:

  • cocal, state, and federal building codes;
  • carpentry skills required to perform all aspects of building repairs;
  • plumbing techniques. Ability to install plumbing; toilets, faucets, water lines, drain traps, etc. in the buildings. Knowledge on how to drain plumbing facilities in the fall and turn them back on in the spring;
  • experience in pouring and finishing concrete;
  • basic building procedures, the ability to read building plans and estimate material needs;
  • communication skills to solve conflicts with visitors, volunteers, and/or seasonal staff;
  • purchasing processes such as ordering from contracts and contacting local vendors for bids;
  • safe operating guidelines for equipment.

Skill to:

  • communicate with all types of people under all types of conditions;
  • read and understand blueprints;
  • utilize technology to plan and organize projects such as WorkZone and Cartegraph systems;
  • motivate a crew of seasonal, volunteer, and permanent staff to complete assigned tasks;
  • diagnose issues and, either repair them, or find someone who can;
  • diagnose plumbing issues and, either repair them, or find someone who can;
  • diagnose HVAC issues and, either repair them, or find someone who can;
  • operate of a variety of hand tools associated with the trades.

Ability to:

  • provide on the job training to assigned employees and volunteers;
  • plan and manage projects to keep them on time and meet deadlines;
  • delegate work to others based on their capabilities;
  • understand and follow instructions, compose required reports;
  • communicate sufficiently to resolve conflicts with staff, volunteers, and the public;
  • work outdoors in all kinds of weather;
  • lift heavy items routinely;
  • develop and make presentations as they relate to natural resources and park management.
