AWC is looking to hire a Day Shift Assistant Rail Supervisor. Work week would be Saturday- Wednesday and you must be flexible with scheduling other shifts when needed. Summary of position:

The Assistant Rail Supervisor must interface with the Operations Supervisor, representatives of the Association of American Railroads and of Norfolk Southern Railroad, and AWC railcar Load and Unload crew. The overall objective of this position is to assign, direct and assist with rail operations for customer vehicle loading and unloading.

Essential Functions, Duties & Tasks:

  • Assigns work to Railcar Load and Unload crew and directs their work processes
  • Trains new associates and temporary workers in the rail loading/unloading process
  • Advises Operations Supervisor of problems that may hinder production or that are related to the crew and need a supervisor's intervention
  • Performs daily preventative maintenance, to include but not limited to lubrication of springs, hinges, pins and all rail equipment, set brakes, open doors
  • Sets-up chains and chocks for customer vehicle loading
  • Using a power blower, cleans rail car decks of debris
  • Opens rail car doors in preparation for vehicle loading and unloading
  • Signs out van and completes van maintenance checklist
  • Gather tools, scanner, radio and other equipment
  • Flags, derails, locks rail tracks
  • Sets hand brakes on rail cars
  • Opens rail car doors
  • Ensures pins are fully seated
  • Remove any debris from rail car decks
  • Ensures all chocks are secured properly
  • Ensures all single rail cars have wheel chocks
  • Completes audits while crews are loading/unloading
  • Address with crews any expectations found during auditing
  • Ensures all AAR rules and regulations are being followed
  • Check proper plate handling and ensures plates are hung correctly
  • Rail ship approve (RSA) all loaded tracks
  • Close all loaded rail cars using proper sealing methods
  • Ensures no units are left on deck after rail crews have completed unloading
  • Inspect all inbound loaded rail cars for damage and report to Operations Supervisor
  • After rail crew unload ensure all chocks are properly stored
  • Ensure all door pins are seated after rail car doors are closed
  • Remove any seals left on the ground
  • Perform end of shift drive through
  • Ensure all broken chocks are placed in bins
  • Check plates for burs and gouges
  • Reacts to change productively
  • Any duties as assigned
  • Conducts himself or herself in a manner that maintains a positive work atmosphere through positive communication and professional and ethical behavior to build and maintain excellent working relationships with customers, vendors, co-workers, and management
  • Good and regular attendance
  • Ability to work in a variety of situations
  • Positive demeanor


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of the use of hand tools (i.e., wrenches, screw drivers, ratchets, etc.)
  • Ability to read and speak English
  • Must have a good sense of balance
  • Ability to work at a height approximately 15 feet above the ground and in tight spaces
  • Good vision
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions, outdoors 90% of the shift
  • Must be safety conscious; able to recognize unsafe conditions and motivated to reduce hazards.
  • Ability to lead others, work in a team environment, and provide performance feedback


Education, Experience & Minimum Requirements:

  • Work experience involving vehicle loading and unloading rail operations and/or rail prep work
  • Ability to pass the AWC Safe Driving, Buck Ramp and Rail Safety quizzes with 80% accuracy
  • Ability to drive both automatic and manual transmission vehicles
  • Valid state Driver's License and ability to maintain the same
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Good and regular attendance
  • Ability to pass Human Performance Evaluation and physical
  • Six months experience supervising or leading others
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain e-RailSafe clearance

Preferred Requirements:

  • Six months experience in rail loading environment
