Alvarado Parkway Institute (API) is San Diego's leading provider of comprehensive mental health and substance abuse care. As a part of our Behavioral Healthcare system, API operates a free-standing 66 bed psychiatric hospital in La Mesa, California with four Intensive Outpatient/Partial Hospitalization Programs. These programs emphasize symptom management, community integration, and prevention of hospitalization or re-hospitalization.
Alvarado Parkway Institute is currently seeking a qualified and experienced individual to join our Assessments and Intake Department as an Assessments Services Coordinator.
This position has varying shifts to include our AM shift 6:00 am to 2:30 pm, PM Shift 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm, and NOC Shift 10:30 pm to 7:00 am.

Job Summary
The Assessment Services Coordinator conducts comprehensive behavioral health assessments in an inpatient psychiatric hospital. These pre-admission assessments are conducted for all patients admitted to the hospital and for all individuals that walk-in seeking an evaluation. Assessments are multifaceted and include a comprehensive risk assessment for danger to self and danger to others, while also assessing for grave disability and risk for substance use withdrawal symptoms.
The Assessment Services Coordinator uses this comprehensive assessment to determine the level of care that would ensure a patient's safety and best serve their unique needs, whether that be in inpatient hospitalization, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, referrals to the community, or transfer to another hospital. Part of this process includes a diagnostic assessment to provide a provisional mental health or substance abuse diagnosis for the treatment team.
Hours worked may meet the requirements towards licensure.
Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Conduct comprehensive behavioral health assessment for all persons seeking psychiatric support
  • Assess for risk to self, the risk to others, grave disability, and substance withdrawal
  • Determine the appropriate level of care
  • Conduct diagnostic assessment
  • Engage in crisis intervention with patients presenting with acute symptoms
  • Complete manage care authorizations with clinicians from insurance companies
  • Explain to potential patients the inpatient hospitalization process, as well as the partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient programs
  • When necessary, file various mandated reports with Adult Protective Services and Child Protective Services, as well as to law enforcement in the case of a Tarasoff
  • Assist in data collection by using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and other computer programs
  • May include other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree or above in psychology, social services, or related field.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification.
  • Experience working with the adult chronically mentally ill population conducting assessments or psychotherapy
  • Strong clinical, assessment, and critical thinking skills.
  • A clear understanding of DSM-5 and ICD-10 diagnostic criteria
  • Strong crisis intervention skills and the ability to quickly identify a patient's needs
  • Skill assessing patients for suicidality, homicidally, and the ability to care for themselves
  • Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team that includes psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed clinicians, social services, nursing, and other disciplines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with documenting in an Electronic Health Record

Physical Requirements:
  • While performing the duties of this job, this position is frequently required to do the following:
  • Use standard office equipment and access, input, and retrieve information from a computer.
  • Use computer keyboard with manual and finger dexterity and wrist-finger speed sufficient to perform repetitive actions efficiently for extended periods of time.
  • Communicate effectively in person or via telephone in a manner which can be understood by those with whom the person is speaking, including a diverse population.
  • Give and follow verbal and written instructions with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Perform complex mental functions and basic arithmetic functions; interpret complex laws, regulations, and policies; collect, interpret, and/or analyze complex data and information.
  • Vision see details of objects at close range.
  • Coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Reach forward, up, down, and to the side.
  • Sit or stand for minimum periods of one hour at a time and come and go from the work area repeatedly throughout the day.
  • Walk and/or stand for long periods of time (3/4 of the workday).
  • Lift up to fifteen (15) pounds.

Background/Reference Check & Licensure/Certification
  • Completion of a satisfactory background and reference checks.

  • Individuals whose position may require licensure, registration or certification must maintain such as current and valid. It is the employee's responsibility to send updated copies to Human Resources before the expiration date. It is the employee's responsibility to notify Human Resources of any changes or proposed changes in status to licensure, registration, or certification. Failure to do so could result in employee suspension.

Covid-19 and Flu Vaccinations; Medical
  • Provide a copy of COVID-19 Vaccination OR have Exemption Request (Deferred Pregnancy, Medical, or Religious) approved by the API HR Director; and those who have an approved Exemption must undergo weekly COVID-19 testing and observe all other infection control requirements, including face coverings.
  • Annual Flu vaccination is required as a condition of hire and ongoing employment. Only those who are allergic to the vaccine or meet contraindications as indicated on the current CDC Vaccine Information Statement shall be exempt from this condition of hire and ongoing employment but are required to wear a mask while inside an APIU owned or operated building or vehicle during influenza season, Employees must provide physician documentation to support any reported allergy or contraindication. Flu season typically runs between November and March.
  • Pass drug and alcohol test
  • Clear TB skin test or Chest X-Ray at a Concentra Occupational Health Clinic
  • Complete a satisfactory physical examination at a Concentra Occupational Health Clinic designed solely to determine your ability to perform the duties of the position being offered.
