Required
  • An earned doctorate in a discipline related to one of the subject areas covered by the Department of Education or other closely related discipline.
  • Three years of teaching experience in higher education at the level of assistant professor or higher.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching, scholarship (inclusive of a record of sustained peer-reviewed publications), professional development, and service.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, strong interpersonal skills, and an ability to work collaboratively at the Department Chair level.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in planning and administration.
  • Successful record of supervision and evaluation of personnel.
  • A commitment to the field of education and the mission of teaching, scholarship, professional development, and service.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in working with diverse groups of students, faculty, staff, and other university constituents.
  • Ability and desire to address the educational needs of a diverse population.
  • Willingness to collaborate and sustain a collegial environment.
  • Ability to manage the Education Department budget.


Preferred
  • A record of successful service in higher education at the rank of assistant professor or higher.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience managing budgets and directing/supervising personnel.
  • Experience in fundraising, external communications, and other advancement initiatives
  • Experience with inclusive and culturally responsive pedagogy and practice
  • Experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses
  • Experience designing contemporary and technology-based learning environments, specifically Blackboard.
  • Grant writing knowledge/experience

Primary Responsibilities
The Chair represents the needs of the Education Department to the Dean. Chair has fiscal responsibility for their department, are expected to attend faculty meetings and to keep their departments informed of Academic Council deliberations and administrative actions, as well as other matters of operational and administrative importance to the College of Education and Professional Studies as a whole.

Duties may include:
Operations of the Education Department
  • Scheduling of classes
  • Assigning faculty to courses and academic advising
  • Mentoring departmental faculty and completing annual performance reviews
  • Overseeing departmental recommendations for faculty promotion and tenure
  • requesting faculty lines, and overseeing departmental recommendations for new faculty hires
  • Lead and assist with accreditation and program reviews
  • Provide recommendations for continuation, tenure, promotion, and termination


Faculty responsibilities may include:
  • Teaches Education courses
  • Creates engaging lessons that promote student involvement and application of the material.
  • Submits required college reports and forms in a timely manner
  • Utilizes a course syllabus for each course, following established institutional guidelines
  • Evaluates students to measure their progress in achieving course objectives and informs students in a timely manner of their progress
  • Maintains professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community
  • Attends meetings, trainings, and orientations as required


Perform other duties as required by the College Dean, Provost/VPAA and/or President

Responsible for personal safety and the safety of others; must exercise due caution and practice safe work habits at all times.

This position is security sensitive.

Texas Law requires a 60 day waiting period before eligible new state employees are eligible to enroll in health insurance.

The report also contains information about crime statistics for the three most recent calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus; in On-Campus Student Housing Facilities; in Noncampus buildings or property owned or controlled by the University or a recognized student organization; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The report also contains fire statistics for any fires occurring in an On-Campus Student Housing Facility during the three most recent calendar years.

Sul Ross State University Alpine Campus is in the Scenic Davis Mountains of West Texas, is a member of the Texas State University System, is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degrees, and has an enrollment of approximately 2,000 students of campus in Alpine, Texas. RGC offers upper-level courses leading to bachelor’s degrees as well as master’s degree programs and works closely with its partner institution, Southwest Texas Junior College, to provide a seamless transition to RGC for their students. All RGC students hold an Associate degree from an accredited institution or they have completed 42 semester credit hours of transferrable work.
