The Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions is a groundbreaking initiative in the intersection of public health advocacy and science. The Center combines the expertise of highly respected gun violence researchers with the skills of deeply experienced gun violence prevention advocates. We use a public health approach to conduct rigorous scientific research to identify a range of innovative solutions to gun violence. Because gun violence disproportionately impacts communities of color, we ground our work in equity and seek insights from those most impacted on appropriate solutions. Using the best available science, our Center works towards expanding evidence-based advocacy and policy-making efforts. This combination of expertise creates a unique opportunity to turn public health research into action that reduces deaths and injuries from gun violence.

The Center for Gun Violence Solutions at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is seeking an Advocacy Communications Specialist to provide strategic communications support to the Center's advocacy and policy initiatives to reduce gun violence.

We are seeking a Advocacy Communications Specialist who will serve an important role within the Center for Gun Violence Solutions. The position provides a high-level of support to the communications team and is primarily responsible for generating and managing cross-platform content (including earned media, website, social media, newsletter, and more) specific to advocacy and policy gun violence reduction efforts. A successful candidate will have experience working in a fast-paced environment, can work independently, and contribute to a team-based environment to advance the advocacy and policy goals and messages of the Center for Gun Violence Solutions.

This is a full-time, hybrid (2 days a week in the office) post based in Baltimore or Washington, DC.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Supports the Center's policy and advocacy work at the federal, state and local level. By developing and executing comprehensive communications content, campaigns, and strategies that advance Center state and federal policy priorities.
Proactively identifies opportunities, messages, audiences, outlets, activities, deliverables, and timetables to support policy initiatives.
Coordinates and engages with the Center's advocacy/policy and programming team and communications team to create advocacy-driven content for the Center's communications channels, external channels, and other platforms as needed.

Responsible for writing opinion pieces/letters to the editor, and contributing to website blogs, social media posts, media opportunities, newsletter content, among content on other platforms.

Helps develop state-level dissemination of Center priority reports through our allies on the ground.

Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with teams across the organization, including government and central communications teams, ensuring internal Center audiences and stakeholders are informed about ongoing public policy priorities and initiatives.

Cultivating relationships with media outlets and personnel in priority states

Oversee standardization, design, departmental approval, and dissemination of fact sheets, policy briefs, and other advocacy translation materials.

Plan and coordinate education events and briefings, like symposiums, forums, and panel discussion events (virtual and in-person) that amplify advocacy and policy priorities of the Center.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong written and verbal communication skills, including effective public speaking and the ability to communicate complex issues both verbally and in written form.
Experience developing and executing communications (eg. earned and social media) strategies and campaigns
Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with all constituents.
Experience working on a diverse team.
Experience working with different communication styles.
An understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities.
Ability to take initiative and be a self-starter.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail and demonstrate an ability to adapt to the needs of a diverse and high-paced research environment quickly and comfortably.
Open communication, sharing of expertise and ideas, and the ability to take direction and respond positively to feedback.
Good oral and written communication and reading comprehension skills, be comfortable using technology (e.g., computers, laptops, tablets, copier, printer) and with Office programs.
Proficiency in utilizing and crafting content for social media platforms (I.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in related field
Four years related experience.
Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience working in gun violence policy or advocacy.
Prior legislative experience.
Graduate Degree.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
