Job description
This is an AmeriCorps national service position. It is contingent on funding and open until filled. Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group is dedicated to restoring Skagit salmon for future generations. Pacific salmon are in decline in many of their former strongholds, affecting humans, orcas, and many other links in the food chain. By engaging community members of all ages, we raise awareness and foster a stewardship ethic. Our WSC Education Associate will help to develop school programs for 3rd-12th grade and implement classroom and field service-learning. In partnership with SFEG staff, interns, other WSC members, and volunteers, help to lead the way toward salmon habitat restoration and community involvement. Ideal candidates have experience with classroom teaching and leading field trips with children, are comfortable being outdoors for long periods of time in inclement weather, and have a background in or interest in learning stream and salmon ecology. Interviews are anticipated to begin in mid April and continue until position is filled.
Member Duties : Help to develop and deliver salmon-related curriculum to students in grades 3-12, within schools of Skagit County; Plan and lead field trips with local youth throughout the year; Maintain communication with teachers to schedule classroom visits, field trips, and associated logistical needs; Recruit and manage local college student interns who assist with school programs; Assist with the implementation of community and volunteer activities in local watersheds; Attend field monitoring training workshops and assist with occasional field monitoring; Represent SFEG at community events throughout the year.
